This activity is open to all cadets who have signed up. There is still room available so interested cadets can sign up Wednesday or email 638air@cadets.gc.ca to add their name to a session. The timings are 0900-1200 or 1300 - 1600. Please ensure that the cadets in the afternoon group are picked up promptly at 4pm.
Transportation is the repsonsibility of the cadet and carpooling is encouraged. The shooting is taking place at the Beachburg Ottawa Valley Sportmans club located at 770 Beachburg Rd.

The smallbore rifle being fired is the same calibre used for the cadet biathlon program. Training outside in November allows cadets to see how the environmental conditions can affect their shooting. This is an outdoor range so cadets need to dress accordingly, keeping in mind that they will be spending periods outside in the prone (laying) position. Winter jackets, toques, gloves (not mittens) and Slush / snow pants are encouraged for this event.
A waiver signed by the parent (or the cadet if the cadet has reached the age of 18) is required by the Beachburg Range. This was given out last week and can be brought to cadets Wednesday or directly to the range. The waiver can also be found here25 October 2011

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FTX
ATTENTION PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
I would like to introduce myself to all new and returning members of the 638 Algonquin Squadron Sponsoring Committee. I was invited to join as committee chair by Ms. Susan Antler, our OPC Director.
I am the mom of Flight Corporal Boland, who joined 638 Squadron in September 2010. I moved to Pembroke when my husband joined the Pembroke Regional Hospital (now Renfrew County) Ambulance Service and I started the nursing program at Algonquin College. Fast forward 20-some years and we now have two children, I am still nursing and Leo is still a Paramedic. I have previously volunteered with our local Heart and Stroke Foundation and with St John Ambulance and am currently involved in advocacy with the Canadian Diabetes Association.
As I see it, our first priority and greatest challenge as Sponsoring Committee is to secure one or more sponsoring partners to provide 638 Squadron with the financial security that will allow it to build on its strengths and grow beyond the status-quo to its full potential. In a time of fierce competition for available funds it might be tempting to keep our heads down and play it safe. I believe our Cadets deserve even more opportunities to excel, and it is my hope that we will be able to develop a creative, successful strategy to achieve this new goal before the 2012 Annual Inspection.
As has been usual, Committee meetings will be scheduled for the first Wednesday evening of the month, therefore our first meeting will be Wednesday, October 5th at 1900 (7pm) in the upper meeting room at the Pembroke Armouries. Please make an effort to invite one or two cadet parents, friends or colleagues to attend. Refreshments will be served.
I look forward to meeting everyone and working together with all of you to enable 638 Algonquin Squadron to provide the best learning and leadership experiences for our cadets.
Sincerely,
Michele Smith

Known as the COPA for kids avaition program, this is a free of charge aviation program that puts COPA member pilots together one-on-one with young people between the ages of 7-17 years of age to show them what aviation is all about and to give them the experience of being in the cockpit of an aircraft in flight. The participants will experience an enjoyable flight which will give them new perspectives in the world and in life in general. Youth attend a "groundschool" and then take part in a 20min flight.

Summer Training
For cadets that have been selcted, congratulations once again. It will be a fun and I am sure challenging summer. There may be times that you may not enjoy, but in the end I haven't seen a cadet on grad day that didn't want to stay longer.
There still is no travel information available. This will be sent to the parent's email as listed in our system once it arrives. Please respond to the travel information in a prompt manner so that I know it has been received. All cadets must show their health card to get on the bus. Without a health card (original, not a photocopy) , cadets will not be able to attend summer training.
Cadets are also asked to bring along the following transportation form to indicate how they will be getting home from camp. Transportation is provided but some parents chose instead to attend the grad parade (the last friday of the course) and pick up their cadet themselves.
http://www.cadets.ca/regions/cen/content-contenu.aspx?id=46571.
The joining instructions (JI's) for all Ontario Cadet Summer Training Centres may be found at http://www.cadets.ca/regions/cen/content-contenu.aspx?id=26681
The JI's provide all the information you need to attend summer training and should be read thoughly by both the cadets and the parents. Here are some highlights:
- Cadets do not wear civilian clothing. Even in their free time, cadets wear the issued PT gear or uniform. For a special occasion such as a dance cadets may be permitted to wear jeans with their PT shirt. Cadets need to bring all items listed on the kit list, including the cadet parka. This may seem silly since it is winter but the outter may be used as a rainjacket and the inner as a windbreaker.
- Do not bring your valuables to camp. You will have access to a locker so bring your own combination (preferred option)/ padlocks.
- There are a couple options for calling home: 1) Cadets may bring cell phones to camp to be used in free time. Each CSTC has a different procedure for cell phones. In general, they are secured at one location and signed out for use by the owner. 2) Pay phones are available at the camps. Cadets should bring a calling card and be familiar with its use. A popular card is the bell "call me card".
- Outside snacks and candy may be confiscated. There is a canteen available at each CSTC. Cadets are recommended to bring $15-$20 per week for spending money. Note: There are no ATM's at the CSTC's. A banking service will be operated at the CSTC. Though not required, most cadets choose to purchase a flight / squadron T-shirt.
- Presciption medication is secured by the CSTC and the cadet must visit the MIR for medcation. Over the counter medication is not to be brought to camp. If needed, it may be administered by the MIR staff.
- Course cadets qualify for a training bonus of $60.00 per week. The bonus is paid in installments, at the end of one and three weeks’ training (for six week courses) and upon completion of the course. Interim installments are paid in cash and the final installment is paid by cheque.
- Leave passes are not available to cadets attending two-week courses. The leave pass policy for courses three weeks or longer differs at each CSTC and I encourage you to research the leave pass policy prior to making plans.

LIFEGUARDS NEEDED
26 May 2011
Annual Ceremonial Review
Guests are encouraged so invite family and friends. The parade begins at 1pm so guests are asked to arrive for 12:30. The cadets have been practicing hard for this event so I am confident that we will impress.
Cadets are to arrive at 8am in civilian attire for a parade practice. Lunch will be provided before getting into uniform for the parade.
End of Year Banquet
There is no cost for cadets in uniform. Adult tickets are $15 and tickets for youth under the age of 12 cost $10. All are encouraged to come out and enjoy a a great meal preapred by the Pembroke Legion Ladies Auxillary. Tickets can be purchased from Civilian Instructor Wendy McGinley.
Freedom of the County Parade
This parade is taking place on a Friday during school hours so attendance is optional and at the discretion of the parents / guardians. Cadets are to be dropped off at the Pembroke Armoury for 0945 on Friday June 10th. From there they will be bussed to the parade involving other local cadet units, military units and legion members. The parade is to begin at 1100 and spectators are encouraged. After the parade lunch will be provided for the cadets. The cadets may be signed out by their parents after the parade or may return on the bus back to the armoury. The cadets are to be picked up for 1430 (2:30pm).
